The Bishop of Majorca and the Chapter of the Cathedral welcome you to the Cathedral of Majorca, which is the most emblematic landmark of art and faith in the island.
Jesús Murgui Soriano
Bishop of Majorca

Welcome to the Cathedral of Majorca.
This building you are going to visit was started in approximately 1306. The major doorway, which is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary, was finished in 1601. It is a place where the Christian sanctity is shown with all its beauty that transcends and attracts us.
Our Cathedral shares with all the rest of the catholic Cathedrals of the world in that it is the Mother Church of the Diocese, a place of prayer and celebration of our faith, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist and the place where the bishop has his Chair (marble seat from the 14th century). The three apses of the Cathedral have three Eucharistic moments: institution, celebration and reservation.
It is known as the Cathedral of the Sea (very near); of light (planned with 87 stain glass windows and 7 rose windows) and the Cathedral of space (it is the gothic church that with less stones possesses more space).
We welcome you to enjoy it.
Mn. Joan Darder Brotat, dean-president

¿WHAT IS A CATHEDRAL?
The Particular Church or Diocese is a promotion of the People of God entrusted to a bishop, who is a successor of the Apostles. This way the bishop, as a shepherd can exercise his three functions of teaching, announcing the Gospel, sanctify administrating the grace of God and rule the faithful according to the law of charity. The Catholic Church is present in each particular diocese, always presided over by the bishop. The bishop, vicar of Christ in the diocese, presides as the Head of the particular church because he has received the Holy Spirit. This is the reason why the bishop uses his ministry of master in faith, pontiff and shepherd, and he is also the principal union in the diocesan church. This is why you have to be in communion with your bishop if you want to be in communion with Christ and the Church.
The most expressive image of the particular church is the Cathedral, symbol of the spiritual temple that all the Christians are. This is why it is the Temple of the bishop assigned to congregate the faithful in assembly. It is the mother of the churches of the diocese. This is the reason why in its inside you can find the Chair of the Cathedral from where the bishop teaches the Gospel. The Eucharist, presided over by the bishop in the Cathedral, manifests the unity of the Church.
CHAPTER OF THE CATHEDRAL
A chapter of canons, whether cathedral or collegial, is a college of priests which performs more solemn liturgical functions in a cathedral or collegial church. In addition, it is for the cathedral chapter to fulfil the functions which the law or the diocesan bishop entrusts to it (Code of Canon Law, 503)
